FAQ

What happens if varicose veins are not treated?

Varicose veins is a condition that usually occurs in the legs and is generally seen as an aesthetic problem among people. However, if varicose veins are left untreated, the condition may progress and symptoms may worsen over time. Possible problems that may occur if varicose veins are not treated may be:

  1. Pain and Discomfort: Varicose veins often cause symptoms such as pain, a feeling of heaviness and discomfort in the legs. These symptoms may increase if left untreated. This can negatively affect the quality of daily life.

  2. Swelling: Varicose veins can cause swelling in the legs due to the enlargement of the veins in the legs. If left untreated, the swelling may become more pronounced.

  3. Skin problems: Circulatory problems caused by varicose veins can lead to changes in the skin. These changes can include skin discolouration, itching and dryness. Varicose veins can cause swelling and discolouration under the skin. This can lead to itching, dryness, skin ulcers and even infections.

  4. Venous Ulcers: In advanced cases, varicose veins in the legs can damage the tissues under the skin and cause venous ulcers (wounds). These ulcers can be difficult to heal.

  5. Thrombophlebitis: Varicose veins can cause weakening of the vein walls in the legs, leading to the formation of intravascular clots called thrombophlebitis.

  6. Dermatitis: Changes in the skin due to varicose veins can sometimes cause inflammatory skin diseases called dermatitis.

  7. Bleeding: In untreated patients with superficial and growing varicose veins, skin integrity may deteriorate after a while and bleeding problems may occur.

  8. Clot and Embolism: In untreated patients with deep vascular insufficiency, a clot may form in the vein and pulmonary embolism may develop. This condition can be fatal. The slowing down and accumulation of blood in varicose veins increases the risk of blood clots forming. These clots can lead to a serious condition known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). DVT can be life-threatening if the clot reaches the lungs.

  9. Lack of confidence: Untreated varicose veins or capillary problems can create unwanted images on the legs. This may cause individuals to feel insecure in their daily lives.

When left untreated, varicose veins are more likely to lead to these complications. Therefore, it is important for people experiencing symptoms of varicose veins to contact a health professional and evaluate appropriate treatment options. Treatment can not only relieve symptoms but can also help prevent potential complications.
